Update on Casa Construction

It's been a long time since I've talked about it and, since I caught the girls peering through the new door on video, I thought I'd bring you up to date. The casa is still under construction, and it looks like we'll be done sometime in June. Yay! I've got to admit the cramped quarters won't be missed!! By me or the cats!

The title on the video below isn't quite accurate. Bitty and Peggy Sue aren't precisely fascinated by the construction. They're fascinated by Winnie exploring the construction. She's the only one I trust in there alone (she is bold and sneaky and slips in when I am passing through). We've already had Bitty sneak in and need to be rescued from the basement ceiling because the opening for the HVAC was just too tempting to resist. LOL!

OK, maybe one resident will miss the construction. As you might remember, Bitty is very fond of high places and she has made good use of the kitchen cabinets stacked in the living room!! Boy oh boy, the flash photography sure does show off the imperfections of the old ceiling, doesn't it?? Good thing it's not as noticeable from the floor!

And here's a shot of the pocket doors from the construction side. The French doors that led from the den (soon to be dining area) to the living room have also been replaced - with double pocket doors. You can see one of them in this pic. The single pocket door will connect the kitchen area to the living room. It will be sort of an "open plan" kitchen/dining room. At least as open as you can get when your house is only 18" wide... LOL! The dining and kitchen areas will be separated by a floor to ceiling cabinet (ending where you see the bulkhead that juts into the room) and an island. And you can see the hole in the floor for the HVAC that held such allure for Bitty!

Here's Winnie checking out the new kitteh friendly window sills. They're 2" wider than the old sills. The old ones weren't wide enough for window sitting when the panes were closed.

Winnie got just a little too close to some of the newly spackled walls.

So, as you can see, the area will still be able to be closed off and used for quarantine when necessary, yet can be a bit more open the rest of the time. Have I mentioned I can't wait until it is done???? ;-)

  1. yeah, we had a medium-sized hole in our (apartment) ceiling this week.

Our smart Suebug *really* wanted to explore. Good thing he couldn't figure out how to get to it.

OTOH, if our dumb cat got up there, he'd never come back. He'd get lost and scared. At least Suebug would find his way back.

  8. Looks like things are moving along quite nicely...bet it will be gorgeous when it's all done! A friend of mine was redoing the floors on the small guest bathroom in their house...everything was ripped up, new baseboard was put on, tiles were then laid down and when everything was set, he heard a little faint "meow" coming from under the floors...a quick head count of the kitties showed one was missing...so the floor was ripped up again, a kitty came sauntering out, and the floor work had to be started all over again :)

  10. We did an addition & renovation about 2 1/2 yrs. ago. It only took our Lily (9lbs. w/tiny paws) about 5 minutes to master opening the newly installed pocket doors. Good luck.

  11. Wow it looks like things are moving very well there - that is great! And it is going to be fun to see if anyone does figure out those pocket doors - my cats can get the closet doors open, which is a similar motion, but I would think that the pocket doors would be heavier.

  14. Hooray for construction progress! We've had to keep Etta and Mimi away from our renovation zone too -- spackle and paint and sawdust we'd rather they didn't roll in ...

  15. i LIKE how you take the cats into consideration when remodeling!! when i moved into my place, i was happy to see nice, deep window sills and lots of kitties making use of them throughout the neighborhood.

  16. you can always tell who's got a cat by the blinds - if they're pulled up about a foot no matter the weather.
