RIP Faithful Old PC

Yep folks, right after the last post the PC officially died.  The long and short of it is that it may be a few days before I post again...

Yesterday I trudged off to Best Buy (yes, Judy, sadly it's not a Mac... too much software I need/have isn't Mac friendly... such is your life when you're a bean counter).  They had the model Consumer Reports recommended as a best buy (Toshiba Satellite A505-S6005) and I got a spiffy new backpack for toting.

While I now have intertube access, you all know how long it takes to set up and tweak a machine to be the way you had it.  Plus, now comes the fun part... reloading all the software (and I have tons) and reloading the data (safely backed up... thank you, thank you neph for getting me an on-the-fly backup unit!).

Unfortunately all my software disks (including camera software!) are buried in the basement because of the construction AND there's no light on that side of the basement.  Wish me luck with the flashlight!!  LOL!

This is my first time doing the set up for a new machine. My wonderful neph has been my own personal Geek Squad for 15+ years (yeah, he was really young and a geek prodigy when he built my first PC). But now he's a married guy and doesn't live as close so I went with my very first "out of the box" computer. Auntie Lisa is learning to do this stuff for herself and she's SLOW. It hasn't been hard (knock wood and thank heaven it is 2010 not 1995... we have stuff like plug'n'play now!)... oh, well, it's good to be self sufficient even if getting there is kinda like starting to exercise for the first time in 15 years!

See you again as soon as we're in working order!

  3. LOL!! I hope not... I like have all my toys in one playground and handy - even if I don't use them a lot.

I was more proficent with this stuff years ago, but at work (where I got a lot of practice back in the day) we can't be admins on our own machines for security reasons, etc. and, of course, wonderful neph set things up so well I didn't have a minute of trouble with this last PC for 4 years(!)so I'm really rusty and out of date.

Exploring the new features is fun, but time consuming (my first Win 7 machine).

  5. I got a A505 series Toshbia just a few months ago. It's my 3rd Toshisha. I love Windows 7. It has some really cool features. It took me minute to figure out the Taskbar, but it's super easy and I love the pins.

  6. I remembered when you fell in love with your iPhone and you were toying with throwing Gates over for Jobs. LOL! I use a windows machine at home too. Works just fine with the phone!

  7. We wish you luck! that's a lot of work. (mum also says that new Macs can run Windows - even Win 7 - so you could have gotten a Mac if you wanted :))

  8. Oh your poor computer! Our Macbook died before Christmas and we had to get an affordable windows machine. You're in for a bit of a shock, but Win7 is ok. Best of luck!

  10. waaah! Hate it when our old computers die and we have to set up a new one! My laptop is a Toshiba and I know their 1.800 service department is really great. You will do fine setting everything up ~ just take your time while loading stuff. The programs usually do all the work.

    Good luck friend!

  11. Ugh. I dread the day.. I'm officially a dinosaur and the mere thought gives me the heebie jeebies.

Good for you, Lisa. You do us ladies "of a certain age" proud!

  12. I'm also a dinosaur and felt like a genius just figuring out how to plug in a new screen. When my pretty sick computer dies I'm in big trouble.

  13. Oh man, 1995 ... we were still using a desktop by Pionex and it had a "turbo" button. It was loaded with Windows 3.1.

Good luck with the new setup. You can do it!

  14. You jinxed me, woman! I knew my hard drive was dying, I ordered a new one and a ghosting kit, yesterday they arrived, I carried the package inside, went upstairs, and the drive died. Guess I'll return the ghosting kit and begin building from scratch...
